After the sprawling ensembles and outrageous premises of his first three films, Bryan sought to challenge himself with a more intimate and serious piece (and work with a cinematographer that wasn't himself). The results were mixed but noteworthy as Naming Sarah made its premiere screening on April 30, 1995 at The Gish Film Theater at Bowling Green State University. ​
